On the occasion of TEFAF Maastricht 2026, the Brun Fine Art gallery presents an exhibition project that offers an interpretation of European collecting through two distinct chronological and cultural contexts, juxtaposed to suggest a continuity of taste that spans different eras.
The first section recalls the tradition of decorative arts between the 17th and 18th centuries, evoking the culture of the studiolo and the Wunderkammer. Objects of virtue and works in semi-precious stones refer to a collecting practice based on the rarity of materials, technical virtuosity and the pleasure of discovery. This section introduces an intimate and intellectual dimension to collecting, linked to wonder, knowledge and refinement of the material.
In dialogue with this dimension, a second nucleus develops that looks to the Neoclassical period and the figurative culture of the 19th century. The focus shifts from the centrality of the material and technical virtuosity to the centrality of the figure, the balance of proportions and the construction of a formal language marked by harmony and idealisation.
The works selected by BRUN Fine Art for TEFAF bear witness to the excellence of great masters - Giuseppe Maria Mazza, Giuseppe Mazzuoli and Rudolph Schadow - offering a detailed and original interpretation of the evolution of European sculptural language from the 17th century to Neoclassicism. In this dialogue between classicism, modern sensibility and expressive research, the complexity and continuity of the European plastic tradition emerges.
