Four of these carvings depict Cupids on chariots drawn by pairs of animals; the fifth, slightly larger, piece, portrays Neptune on a chariot with hippocamps. The works are mounted on gold leaf and enclosed in a leather case on which is embossed the coat of arms of the Lattre-Doby family, originally from Dinant near Lieges. Overall this set is a perfect expression of the late Neoclassical taste that gave rise to a popular production of cameos for jewellery. The carved images are inspired by paintings found at Herculaneum and by Renaissance grotesques like the famous frescoes of Villa Lante in Rome, used in the same period as a source of inspiration by the mosaic artists working in the city. In style and technique these works are very similar to those on the edge of a chessboard in semi-precious stones made at the manufactory specializing in stone inlays in Naples in around 1809 (now in the Castle of Fontainebleau) on commission from Gioacchino Murat, resting on a support of gilded bronze also inlaid with coral (González-Palacios 1981, I, pp. 70-71).
